Albany ISD provides specialized instructional support to students who have been identified as dyslexic. Dyslexia manifests in difficulties with phonemic awareness, decoding, reading fluency or spelling. In most cases, these difficulties are unexpected given the student's cognitive abilities.
The Texas Education Code (TEC) §38.003 defines dyslexia as a disorder of constitutional origin manifested by a difficulty in learning to read, write, or spell, despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and sociocultural opportunity.
If you suspect that your child may be dyslexic, or if you have further questions regarding the district's dyslexia program, contact your child's teacher. You may also contact the dyslexia coordinator at kristiesmith@albany.esc14.net.
